Hill, Azar, Harrison are tops in Gas Pro Open Junior Tennis Championships

Danile Hill, John Azar, Jenna Harrison, and Daniel Azar all shared the spotlight at the 2016 Gas Pro Open Junior Tennis Championships that ended at the Liguanea Club in new Kingston, on Sunday.

The age group competition was the continuation of Tournament Director Llockett McGregor’s Tennis Series for junior players from several schools.

Hill captured the boys’ 18 and under singles title in easy and convincing straight sets 6-1, 6-1 wins over second seed Gregory Lawrence.

The Boys’ 16 and under singles final was won by top seed John Azar, who beat second seed Damani Cain in straight sets 6-0, 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker). Azar knocked out fourth seed Tariq Simons in straight sets 7-6, 6-3, while Cain stopped third seed John Chin 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker), 6-2 in their respective semi-finals.

Jenna Harrison captured the Girls’ 16 and under singles final when she fought off the challenge of Selena Blythe in a ‘super tiebreaker’ 10-1 after the scores were locked at 7-5, 2-6.

In their semi-finals, Harrison had a comfortable 6-3, 6-1 win over Iesha Sterling, while Blythe won in the ‘super tie-breaker’ 10-2 to clinch the match after winning the first set 7-6 and losing the second set 5-7, with the match locked at 1-1.

Top seed Daniel Azar captured the Boys’ 14 and under singles title by the ‘super tiebreak’ rule 10-7 but had to work hard to obtain victory. The final was tied at 1-1 with Azar winning set one 6-4, but went down 3-6 in the second set. The ‘super tiebreak’ had to be used to decide the winner of the match.

The Girls’ 14 and under singles final was won by Moesha Fox who rallied from a set down before winning 10-1 easily on the ‘super tiebreaker’ rule over Mia Minott. The match was locked at 1-1 with Fox losing the first set 3-6, but came back strongly in the second set to win 6-3.

In their semi-finals, Fox beat Alexandria Minott 8-3, while Mia Minott breezed past Shelby Manuel of the United States of America (USA) 8-0.

Jordan Vaz won the Boys’ 12 and under singles title with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win over unseeded Matthew James. Vaz, who was the third seed, defeated second-seeded Alexander Bicknell 8-1, while unseeded James gained a walk over from fourth-seeded Keyondre Clarke in their respective semi-finals.

The Girls’ 12 and under singles final round robin was won by Abigail Perue, who defeated Alyssa James 8-2, Micayah Porter 8-4, and Alicia Pearman 8-1 for her wins, while James won two and lost one to finish second. She beat Porter 8-2 and Peraman 8-4, while losing 2-8 to Perue.

Eva Pinchas captured the Girls’ 10 and under singles final by winning all her three matches, beating Courtney Chin 6-4, Samantha Azar 6-4, and Gabriella Machado 6-0. Azar was the runner-up with two wins and a loss, beating Chin 6-1 and Machado 6-0, while losing to Pinchas 4-6.
