Spruce Up Jamaica campaign restarts with $250m
The Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo) yesterday announced that $50 million has so far been earmarked for all 63 constituencies for post-Labour Day activities as part of the new Spruce Up Jamaica Programme.
Overall, the programme will see up to $250 million spent on constituencies islandwide.
“Each of the 63 constituencies will have access to $4 million in support of development projects. Funds already drawn down, per constituency, will be deducted from the cap,” TPDCo said in a news release.
The new programme, TPDCo said, is geared towards the country’s growth agenda, with a focus on creating integration among industries and programmes that impact the tourism industry.
“It aims to facilitate sustainable livelihoods through job creation, sound environmental practices, the participation of communities in local area development, facilitation of small and medium tourism enterprises (SMTEs) and effective integrated marketing communications — a vehicle for building out an inclusive industry,” the agency added.
The Spruce Up Jamaica Programme was an initiative of the Ministry of Tourism and its agencies, which ran from 2007 to 2012. Its emphasis was on the physical environment, mind, body and spirit, community development, partnerships through entrepreneurship, and promoting heritage.
Yesterday, TPDCo said it was against this background that the programme is being revitalised with modifications geared at strengthening implementation and monitoring for greater impact.
