Holness concerned about political, economic developments in Venezuela
KINGSTON, Jamaica – In pledging that Jamaica will continue to be a voice of fairness and balance in the region, Prime Minister Andrew Holness today expressed concern about the political and economic developments in Venezuela.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister following talks with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who arrived in the island yesterday for a one-day working visit, Holness said he wished for peace to prevail in Venezuela.
“We have been closely following, with concern, the political and economic developments in Venezuela, and we wish for social and political peace to prevail, for the greater good and welfare of all Venezuelans,” Holness said.
President Maduro is facing rising public discontent in his country over the collapse of Venezuela’s oil-based economy. Venezuela’s opposition is also seeking to oust him through a recall referendum.
The prime minister said he is looking forward to an amicable resolution for the good of all Venezuelans.
“It is our belief that disputes should be resolved peacefully and diplomatically through dialogue, respect for democracy, rule of law, and good governance,” the prime minister said. “We look forward to a timely and amicable resolution, and a return to stability, for the good of the people of Venezuela.”
The prime minister then wished the Government and people of Venezuela “peace, progress and prosperity” in the years ahead.
