Labour minister says decent, safe work a priority
Labour and Social Security Minister Shahine Robinson said workplace safety and wellness contributed significantly to productivity and efficiency, and were key factors in reducing poverty and achieving sustainable development.
She noted that the Government was placing priority on securing and maintaining decent and safe work for all Jamaicans through the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Bill which is expected to be passed during the current fiscal year.
Robinson was addressing a Workers’ Week panel discussion, which was held recently under the theme: ‘Rethinking Work for Human Development’, at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston.
Among areas addressed were the importance of equal work for equal pay, gender equity, the under-representation of women in certain spheres, and opportunities presented by flexible working arrangements to balance work and domestic lives, as well as the link between occupational and public health.
