Arnett, key players reprimanded by PFAJ
Former Red Stripe Premier League champions Arnett Gardens have been fined $200,000 and banned from playing at their home field at Anthony Spaulding Complex for the first two games of the 2016-2017 season by the Operations Committee of the Professional Football Association of Jamaica (PFAJ) at its meeting held May 19.
Additionally, Arnett Gardens will have a six-month home field probation for the new season.
Team captain Oniel “Bigga” Thompson was also fined $5000 and suspended for the first two games of the new campaign after incidents that marred their return-leg semi-final tie against eventual champions Montego Bay United last month.
Two other players, Marcelino Blackburn and Dicoy Williams, who were also summoned to the PFAJ meeting, but failed to show, have been banned from all football activities until they face the tribunal, a release from the PFAJ said yesterday.
Blackburn is charged with threatening the officials after the game, while Williams is charged with using offensive language to the officials.
Reports reaching the Jamaica Observer are that the meeting was not held earlier after the incidents on April 17, as Arnett Gardens were preparing for the Caribbean Football Union club championship in Trinidad.
The PFAJ’s Operations Committee found that Arnett Gardens breached Article 8.7b — Lack of Discipline and Order inside or Outside Grounds — on April 17th as they played out a 2-2 draw against Montego Bay United, and were dumped out of the Premier League on a 4-3 aggregate.
“This following separate incidents of missile throwing and other incidents during RSPL Play-Offs Semifinal 2 (#201 – Arnett Gardens FC vs Montego Bay United FC on Sunday, April 17, 2016 at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex,” the release said.
Thompson, the Arnett Gardens captain and former national player who has played professionally in Europe, was found guilty of physically assaulting a female assistant referee in breach of the Jamaica Football Federation Disciplinary code Article 49. Thompson had slapped away her hand after she had ruled a goal off-side.
Thompson, who was named most outstanding player the previous RSPL season when he led Arnett Gardens to the title, was not penalised for the incident at the time.
