KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) on Tuesday warned of scammers in the Old Harbour business district, saying that it has received reports that people are impersonating TAJ compliance officers.

In a news release, TAJ said these impersonators are demanding that people pay over taxes to them or face court action.

The TAJ therefore advised the public that no business is to be conducted with people claiming to represent the tax authority who fail to produce proper identification. “These individuals do not represent the TAJ and are not authorised to conduct business on its behalf,” the TAJ said.

According to the release, the matter has been reported to the police and TAJ is working with the authority to address it.

“Business persons are reminded that if they owe outstanding amounts, they may visit the tax office and speak with a compliance officer to make an arrangement to pay,” the TAJ said. “Alternately, persons may create a payment plan using the Revenue Administration Information System (RAiS) on the TAJ website www.jamaicatax.gov.jm.”
