Parchment primed to go one better at Racers Grand Prix
Following his two second-place finishes in the 110m hurdles in the Diamond League, the Racers Grand Prix will provide Jamaica’s Hansle Parchment the chance to go one better.
Parchment, 25, is the national record holder with 12.94 seconds and the first Jamaican sprint hurdler to win a bronze medal at the Olympic Games, in 2012, and silver at the 2015 World Championships.
But he has been relegated as Jamaica’s second-ranked 110m hurdler in recent times, finishing second to Omar McLeod at both the Doha and Shanghai Diamond League races.
In Doha, Qatar on May 6, McLeod won in 13.05 seconds with Parchment second in 13.10. Then on May 14 in Shanghai, China, Parchment was again runner-up in 13.12 seconds, while McLeod won in a world-leading 12.98 seconds.
At the moment, that rivalry has taken Jamaica to the top of men’s 110m hurdling. Though McLeod will not feature at the Racers Grand Prix, Parchment will have his hands full against a high-quality field including two world champions and a Commonwealth Games champion.
Parchment will have to contend with American 2011 world champion Jason Richardson and his compatriot Jarret Eaton; 2009 world champion Ryan Brathwaite of Barbados; Mikel Thomas of Trinidad and Tobago; and fellow Jamaican Andrew Riley, the 2014 Commonwealth Games champion; along with Deuce Carter and young and talented Tyler Mason.
Parchment and Richardson will renew their rivalry as both finished third and second at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Parchment is the second-fastest man over the hurdles this year with 13.10, while Richardson’s seasonal best of 13.33 seconds places him ninth in the world. He has a personal best of 12.98 seconds.
Brathwaite, who won the event at the 2009 Berlin World Championship in Germany, has a season best of 13.78 seconds. His personal best is 13.14 seconds.
An interesting entry will be Eaton, who announced himself to the world by winning at the Ostrava World Challenge Meet in the Czech Republic on May 20.
Eaton — who is of no relation to Ashton Eaton, the American 2012 decathlon Olympic champion and 2015 World champion — won the Ostrava meet in season’s best 13.25 seconds. He will be in the mix at the Racers Grand Prix and could surprise his more fancied rivals.
Jamaica’s Commonwealth champion Andrew Riley has not hit the ground running as yet with a season best of 13.77, and this meet will give him a wonderful chance to see where he is and what he needs to do.
Jamaica’s Carter, who established his personal best of 13.41 seconds on April 1, will be looking to improve that time as he too has high hopes of pushing for a spot on Jamaica’s team to the Rio Olympics.
Jamaica’s 2014 World Youth silver medallist, Tyler Mason, who broke Omar McLeod’s National Junior Record that year, will get a chance at top-class hurdling. Mason has a 13.62 clocking this season and will be looking to improve on that come June 11 at the Racers Grand Prix.
