ST JAMES, Jamaica — The narcotics police arrested two Canadian men within hours of each other for breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act at the Sangster International Airport in St James on Tuesday.

The men, who have since been charged with possession of, dealing in and attempting to export cocaine, have been identified as: Joseph Southhill, 53, of Dundas in Ontario, Canada; and Orville Brown, 52, of Kingston Road in Toronto, Canada

The police say Southhill was nabbed about 11:50 pm when checks made on luggage belonging to passengers scheduled to board a flight destined for Toronto, revealed irregularities.

A tin labelled as cocoa powder was removed from a suitcase — which was confirmed as Southhill’s — and opened in his presence. It was found to contain cocaine weighing approximately one and a half pounds.

Later, about 1:45 pm, officers were again conducting security checks in the departure hall on passengers checking in to board a flight destined for Toronto. Brown was searched and four parcels, containing cocaine weighing approximately two and a half pounds, were found.

The illicit drug has a combined estimated street value of almost J$2 million.

Southhill is scheduled to appear before the St James Parish Court on Wednesday June 1, 2016, while Brown will appear Monday, June 6.
