Sts Peter and Paul take early lead at Prep Champs
STS PETER and Paul, with 20.50 points, are the early leaders after two finals at the 2016 Jamaica Independence Schools Association (JISA)/Tastee Limited Prep Schools Athletics Championships on day one at the National Stadium yesterday.
The highly touted Mona lie in second position with 17.50 points, followed by Quest nine, Vaz eight, Knox Junior School six, while Belair, Stella Maris and defending champions Hydel are on four points each.
Gary Card of Ardenne was the first athlete who broke a record yesterday, when he clocked 8.42 seconds in the Class Two boys 60-metre dash to erase the previous best mark of 8.50 seconds held by Duncan McKenzie and set in 2014.
Meanwhile, McKenzie captured gold in the Class One boys high jump final with a winning height of 1.59 metres, ahead of Blaine Blake of Quest (1.56) and Christopher Seaton of Vaz, third with 1.53 metres.
The other athlete to have won gold was Probea Champagnie of Sts Peter and Paul, as he took the Class Two boys high jump final with a leap of 1.45 metres ahead of his teammate Aaron Thomas with 1.33m. Third went to Shemaiah Salmon of Knox Junior School with 1.30 metres.
The championship continues this morning at 8:30 with four finals in the Class One boys long jump, Class Two girls high jump, Class One girls high jump, and the Class One girls long jump.
The semi-finals of the 100 metres, 200m, 400m, 300m, 60m, 50m for the various classes will also take centre stage.
