Time for the talk
In the wake of the recent massacre in Orlando, Florida, and the impact on the conversation in Jamaica, columnist Christopher Burns says it is time to truly open the public square to address the country’s response to individuals who choose what he dubs “the forbidden path”. Burns says the dialogue must encourage tolerance rather than hate or bigotry. Citing the ‘pious’ response of two ministers who spew next-to-hate speech, he finds his way to a plateau, concluding that, while no one should be forced to embrace what he/she considers objectionable, people should not have to walk on egg shells and be deprived of human rights. It’s hard, Burn says, but we must keep it on The Agenda.
