Jamaica cop gold, silver at international tae kwon do championships
JAMAICA’S juniors, Joshane Thompson and Tahj Hewitt, won over thousands of supporters inside the DirectvArena at the June 18-22 International Taekwon-Do Federation Pan-Am Championships, winning gold and silver, respectively in the -70kg sparring division.
The Jamaican teens, both 18, fought their way past opponents from Argentina, Chile and Paraguay — Three tough individual bouts each — to take the top two spots in an all-Jamaica final.
The only blacks among 3,000 competitors at the tournament, the Jamaicans’ fighting skills have proven infectious, prompting a full house of Argentines to chant — “Jamaica Jamaica” — in the semi-finals against Chile.
Nicholas Dusard, fresh off a bronze medal performance at the recent Legacy Open in New Jersey, is also scheduled to compete along with Trevor Webb Jr and Akino Lindsay.
