Opposition expresses concern following Britain’s EU exit
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) has expressed concern following Britain’s decision to break out of the European Union on Thursday.
Opposition spokesman on foreign affairs and foreign trade Dr Morais Guy, in a news release on Friday, said while the Opposition respects the decision of British voters to exit the EU, it will be monitoring the situation in terms of its economic and political implications to Jamaica.
“We the PNP would wish for the existing cordial relations with Britain to continue, principally in light of the thousands of our people living in the UK. No doubt our fellow Jamaicans will be impacted by this vote one way or another and we hope that whatever decisions are made, will result in the improvements of the lives of Jamaicans there and the immigrant community as a whole,” Dr Guy said.
He said the Opposition is equally concerned with the early signs of a weakened Pound Sterling, as this could have some economic implications for Jamaica.
“The Opposition will keep a watchful eye on these developments as they unfold and monitor the repercussions, if any, for our beloved Jamaica and its people,” he added.
