Dear Orchid Doc:
What does the grower mean when she uses the term “mericlone orchid”?
MM
Dear MM:
A mericlone is creating a true copy of an original hybrid plant through meristem propagating. This is usually done with a flawless hybrid.
Mericlones usually are more expensive, but are the best way to ensure that you get exactly the shade you need. (I believe this is done here in Jamaica at the Ministry of Agriculture.)
Just in case you have an orchid you adore, you can have it cloned.
Dear Orchid Doc:
I have been trying to buy orchids via the Internet. What is meant by the following terms:
BS, NBS, FS?
WC
Dear WC:
BS means ‘blooming size’ so it will be about a year before the orchid blooms.
NBS means ‘near blooming size’ — it will be about two years before you see a bloom.
FS means that your orchid might even arrive with a bloom. This is a full-sized orchid.
