Nedrick forced to choose between the throws
Kevin Nedrick could have a big decision to make after an outstanding two days at the recent Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association’s (JAAA) National Junior Trials at the National Stadium in Kingston.
The Petersfield High thrower won the boys discus throw with 55.72m on the final day of the two-day trials, after placing second in the shot put to his teammate Sanjae Lawrence a day earlier with a personal best 19.18m.
Both marks were over the qualifying distance for the IAAF World Under-20 Championships to be held in Poland next month and gives the athlete a choice of which event he would prefer if he can’t do both.
“That’s hard, but right now I would choose the shot put as the 19m mark to me is more impressive than the discus,” Nedrick told the Jamaica Observer.
Nedrick, who won the gold medal in the shot put at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa last year, said: “My aggression for the shot put is better right now, and I am more comfortable with the mechanics of the shot put than the discus right now.”
Despite that, however, the athlete who won two silver medals at the Carifta Games last year was not completely happy in the discus as he failed to repeat the 58-plus-metre personal best mark he threw a few weeks ago at a JAAA All-Comers meet at the National Stadium.
“I am not very pleased with the performance in the discus; that was the event that I really put the work into for the Trials,” he said.
Nedrick was, however, satisfied with his consistency with three throws over 55.00m in the event and said he was hoping to land the discus over the 60.00-metre mark.
