UPDATE: Men purporting to be cops shot schoolgirl — Police
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Commissioner of Police Dr Carl Williams has ordered senior investigators to launch a probe into the circumstances of the shooting of a 15-year-old female student of the Convent of Mercy Academy (Alpha) in downtown Kingston this morning.
Initial reports said the student, who was travelling in a motor vehicle on Mark Lane, was shot in the head, allegedly by police.
However, according to the police’s Corporate Communications Unit (CCU), the student was a passenger in a taxi when she was reportedly shot in the head by men travelling in a Hiace motor bus purporting to be police officers.
The incident occurred about 7:30 am.
The police added that the identity of the person(s) travelling in the Hiace bus has not yet been confirmed.
Meanwhile, Williams has expressed sympathy to the family and school community of the injured student and wished her a full recovery.
The commissioner also sought to reassure the public that “the police will do all in our power to bring the perpetrators to justice”.
Williams has appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward and give the information to the police and the Independent Commission of Investigations.
He also promised the force will cooperate fully with INDECOM as they investigate.
