Trainer Michael Marlowe strikes the second time
Michael Marlowe, son of former jockey and trainer Valbert Marlowe, saddled his first winner as a trainer when the grey gelding Bigbrowngreyhope romped home in the second race at Caymanas Park on Wednesday.
It was Michael’s second ever runner, with his first – Leekout – finishing third on debut.
Michael, who only became a trainer earlier this year, said that it was “a pleasure to be in the winner’s enclosure at this moment. Winning my first race is just wonderful, as my old man (Valbert) must be in the sky looking down on me right now. It is just a great feeling which words alone really can’t explain. I am happy to win my first race,” Michael said with visible emotion etched on his face.
Ridden by the in-form Aaron Chatrie, Bigbrowngreyhope was not the fastest to leave the starting gates, but recovered quickly to go down into a striking position in third place approaching the half-mile. Bigbrowngreyhope then responded well from the urgings of Chatrie in deep stretch, and powered home to score by three lengths in a claiming race ($450,000-$400,000) over 1,300 metres. The winning time was 1:20:3 minutes.
“It was a good race, and the rider rode a brilliant race as well. I really can’t complain about anything, as everything has gone great for me so far.
“I didn’t give Chatrie any instructions or anything like that. I only told him to go and win a race for me. I did what I had to do, and that was exactly what the rider (Chatrie) did – he won a race for me and I am very happy for that,” the young Marlowe said.
“I claimed him (Bigbrowngreyhope) on June 18 and raced him back in 11 days’ time, and I just want the people to know that I can train a racehorse. The stable is pretty much on a high right now as we won our first race. We currently have five horses and we are looking to expand that rapidly,” he added.
