Too few KSAFA players in Under-20 squad, lashes Stephenson
Boys’ Town FC topped the Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Under-20 football competition and walked away with the Alliance Finance/McKay Security Trophy and $50,000 at a prize-giving ceremony at the Altamont Court Hotel in New Kingston last week Tuesday.
While congratulating the players, coaches, managers and companies for supporting a programme that is aimed at promoting local talents to lay the foundation to aid development for a continued vibrant football culture, KSAFA president, Ambassador AB Stewart Stephenson expressed grave disappointment at the scarcity of players that were selected from KSAFA in the final squad that travelled to the Dominican Republic, “given the vast talent on display in our Under-20 competition”.
Stephenson said that despite “the extremely high quality of football displayed by the teams, particularly at the semi-final and final stages between Boys’ Town and Waterhouse, from our standpoint at the KSAFA, we were expecting to have more players in the National Under-20 squad.
“More so, to come from at least the top four teams in the competition, seeing that the competition is staged at a time to have players prepared for competitions like these, which are staged at this particular time of the year.
“Importantly, this competition also provided an opportunity for the coaches of the Jamaica Under-20 squad, Mr Ricardo ‘Bibi’ Gardner and his assistant Mr Altimont Butler to view our talented players while they were in the process of preparing the team for the CFU Qualifiers that were played in the Dominican Republic and ended with Jamaica’s elimination from the competition after disappointing losses to St Kitts and Nevis,” the KSAFA head added.
Winners Boys’ Town had only one player selected. Second-placed Waterhouse had two players.
Boys’ Town defeated defending champions Waterhouse FC 1-0 in the competition final with an extra-time goal from 30 yards by second-half substitute Arthur Walters at the Constant Spring Complex on June 10.
Waterhouse, who switched places with Boys’ Town, were on hand to receive their trophies along with their second-placed prize of $40,000. Third-placed Harbour View FC received $30,000, while Arnett Gardens FC took home $20,000 and the Zone winners $7,500.
Omar Edwards, who took Boys’ Town out of the doldrums to win the title after six years, was the Under-20 Coach Of The Year.
The leading Goal Scorer Award went to Andre Leslie of Waterhouse FC with nine goals; Pembroke Hall FC copped the Fair Play Award; Derrick Upfield of Boys’ Town was the Under-20 Manager of the year, and Tevin Shaw, also of Boys’ Town FC, won the MVP Award.
Under-20 Referees Award went to Malica Read, Keble Williams, Yanique Jarrett and Richard Mitchell.
