Westmoreland teens die in car crash
LITTLE LONDON, Westmoreland — The early morning journey home from a party yesterday morning ended tragically for two teens who died from injuries they received in a car crash.
The deceased have been identified as 19-year-old Sheldon Campbell and Paul Bowen,16; both from the King’s Valley section of Grange Hill, Westmoreland.
Meanwhile, a 15-year-old, who was the third occupant of the vehicle, was reportedly taken to hospital where he was treated for minor injuries, the police say.
Reports are that about 4:30 am, Campbell was driving a grey 2007 Nissan Tiida motor car along the Little London main road, towards Grange Hill, when he lost control of the vehicle. The car reportedly hit a garbage receptacle then slammed into a tree before riding an embankment and overturned.
Both Campbell and Bowen — who occupied the front passenger seat — were thrown from the vehicle, police say. The injured 15- year-old, who was seated in the back, was rushed to hospital.
Head of the Westmoreland Traffic Department, Corporal Jeffery Barnett used the opportunity to appeal to motorists to observe the speed limit and other road codes.
Barnett told the Jamaica Observer that Campbell and Bowen’s deaths are the first road deaths recorded in the parish since May 28. He attributed this to an ongoing zero-tolerance road traffic operation in which 51 illegally operated motorcycles have been seized across the parish.
“Motorcycles were responsible for a large percentage of the road fatalities we had last year. Bikes also factor in robberies and murders in the parish as the perpetrators use them as their means of transportation,” Corporal Barnett explained.
He promised a sustained drive against road traffic offenders for one to two days each week for the rest of this year.
