Food Preservation –
Points to remember:
Your storage area should be dry, cool and free from contamination by insects, poisons and other chemicals.
Arrange items so that those stored first will be used first.
Turn cans of evaporated milk upside down every 30 days.
Store dried, preserved foods in clean, airtight containers such as cans, bottles or plastic packets with covers.
Store wet, preserved food in cool, dark areas.
Observe the expiry date on packaged foods.
Replace items removed from the emergency store as soon as possible.
Keep all food covered at all times.
Open food boxes or cans carefully so that you can close them tightly after each use.
Wrap bread, crackers or cookies in plastic bags and keep them in tight containers.
Do not forget canned and non-perishable foods for your pets.
