My Kingston — Henry Grandison
What are your earliest memories of Kingston?
We lived in St Mary, and I remember visiting Kingston with my father Henry Sr as he sold oil on canvas landscape paintings to different galleries.
What’s the most memorable meal that you have enjoyed in Kingston?
Having ribs at JoJo’s Jerk Pit with friends.
What would you do if you were mayor of Kingston for a day?
I would try to help the homeless in any way possible.
What would be your recommendations to a first-time visitor to Kingston?
To check out the National Gallery of Jamaica.
What Rock tale or event would you love to see committed to a collection of balloons and panels?
The rise to global fame of Usain Bolt.
V for Vendetta or Watchmen?
V for Vendetta.
What is it about art that makes storytelling that more vivid?
The pictorial representation in art is a universal means of communication, and therefore has the power to reach any and everyone regardless of background or creed.
Do people understand what it is that you do?
No, although I just recently completed an instalment of my comic strip Maroon Black in the inaugural issue of I-Land Chronicles, most people simply assume that I’m an animator and not a comic illustrator.
How crucial is self-awareness and self-esteem in pursuing the life of an artist?
These elements of self-perception influence the type and quality of your work. If skewed in a more positive direction they may help you to withstand negative criticism and ultimately persevere on the art scene in Jamaica.
Themes of heroism and alter egos are dominant forces in the universe of comic books. What’s the overarching message being passed on to the readers of such literature?
For those who are unable to help themselves, comic books help with self-confidence, inspire hope, offer some means of escape from the problems of real life, and encourage readers to attempt to make the world a better place from their neck of the woods.
