White takes GOLD at NACAC championships
Kali Davis-White struck the only gold for Jamaica on yesterday’s final day of the North American, Central America and Caribbean Athletics Association (NACAC) Under-23 championships in El Salvador, capturing the 200-metre event.
Jamaica picked up two 4x400m relay silver medals. They finished the championships with eight medals, inclusive of four gold and as many silver.
The 20-year-old Davis-White, who was third at Jamaica’s Senior Championships in the 200m behind Simone Facey and Veronica Campbell-Brown, clocked a wind-aided 22.66 seconds (2.6 m/s) for victory. Cuba’s Arialis Gandulla was well behind in second with 23.36, while Robin Reynolds of the United States of America third in 23.40.
The mile relay team of Sonikqua Walker, Dawnalee Lonely, Samantha James and Chrisan Gordon was second in 3.32.06 minutes. The dominant Americans won in 3:28.45. Canada was third in 3:44.45 minutes.
Jamaica’s men were also second as Twayne Crooks, Martin Manley, Keeno Burrell and Nathan Allen completed the in 4x400m relay in 3:04.11 minutes. The USA won convincingly in an impressive 3:00.89, with the Bahamas third in 3:04.74 minutes.
Earlier, high jumper Christoff Bryan could only place seventh, clearing 2.05 metres, while his teammate Mathew Campbell was fourth with the same height. The event was won by Alvin Jones of the US with 2.22m.
Jamaica’s Shanice Porter and Tissanna Hickling were fourth and sixth in the long jump with jumps of 6.37m and 5.70m, respectively. Quansha Burks of the US won in a championship record of 6.74m. Akela Jones of Barbados was second, also with 6.74m.
Vashon McCarthy got the better of his teammate Warren Barrett, but both failed to medal in the men’s shot put. McCarthy was fourth with a personal best of 17.84m, with Barrett down in eighth with 17.03m. American Brahame Davis won with 19.36m.
