GCB criticised for not switching venue in rain-ruined Super-50
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) — Coach of Trinidad and Tobago’s women cricket team, Gerald Garcia, has criticised cricket officials in Guyana for not selecting a new venue to play the finals of the WICB Regional Women’s Super-50 Championship on Sunday.
T&T were crowned new title-holders after the final against Barbados was abandoned without a ball being bowled because of wet conditions caused by heavy overnight rain at Everest.
T&T were entering the finals at the top of the standings on 12 points, one higher than Barbados after 12 of the 16 matches were completely washed out.
“It’s very disappointing that the fixtures seemed to be set in stone even when it was becoming obvious that we were turning up to the same venues and not being able to play any cricket,” said Garcia.
“The weather was bad even before the tournament began and the conditions, especially at Enterprise, were not good, but we kept going back to the same grounds over and over again.”
Among those who turned up to witness the finals, were members of Guyana’s national U-15 and U-19 teams as well as the Leewards team which made its debut in the regional tournament this year.
Garcia has chided the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) for not making preparations to switch the final to Providence since the Guyana leg of the Caribbean Premier League was already completed.
“This is also a developmental tournament and while I am happy that we won, I am not pleased how we won,” he said.
The T&T Coach says the lack of cricket frustrated the players, especially those who were keen on being seen by the chairman of the WIBC selectors Courtney Browne and fellow selector Lockhart Sebastien, who are in Guyana.
The Twenty20 phase of the Championship starts on Thursday at Providence.
