Granville Jaguars look to wrap up EBL title today
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Defending Elite Basketball League (EBL) champions Granville Jaguars could retain their title today when they take a 1-0 lead into their best-of-three Western Basketball Association Tropical Blue Natural Spring Water competition finals against Catherine Hall All-Stars at the Montego Bay Cricket Club, set to start at 7:45 pm.
Jaguars won Tuesday’s first game 68-63 and another win tonight would see them retaining their title over Catherine Hall for the second straight year.
In the first game of the double-header set to start at 6:00 pm, Muschett Falcons will also be seeking to wrap up the Men’s Basketball Championships and earn promotion to the EBL next season when they take a 1-0 lead into their game against Innercity Avalanche.
Muschett had won their first game, also played on Tuesday, 56-38, and if they can come out with the same intensity as they showed in the second half on Tuesday, it could be over early.
If either or both of the titles are not decided, the third and deciding games would be played tomorrow at the same venue.
In Tuesday’s first game, Catherine Hall led Granville for two quarters before the defending champions took over and outscored them 36-27 over the last two quarters, as three players Levar Rose, Dave Black and Otis Foster combined for 54 points.
Catherine Hall led 21-16 after the first quarter and held their five-point margin at half time, leading 37-32.
Jaguars came alive in the third quarter and tied the scores at 54 before surging ahead in the final quarter.
Rose led all scorers with 25 points and four steals, Black had 18 points, eight assists and five steals, while Foster scored 11 points and had six rebounds.
Craig Dorman led Catherine Hall with 16 points and nine rebounds; Julian Walker scored 12 points, and Vaughn Corke had 10 points and nine rebounds.
In the first game, after trailing by seven points at the half-time break, Falcons scored 15 straight points at the start of the third quarter to wrest control of the game and never relented as Michael Schloss had a triple-double comprising 23 points, 15 rebounds and 10 steals.
The teams were tied at nine-all after the first quarter and Avalanche, who had completed their come-from-behind semi-final win over UWI-WJC Jayhawks two days prior, led at half-time 22-15 and appeared to be in control.
Led by Schloss and Karlington Barrett, who had 13 points, Falcons started aggressively in the second half and reeled off 15 points before Avalanche could react.
Falcons led 39-23 at the end of the third quarter and increased their margin in the fourth quarter as they held Avalanche to 16 second-half points.
Shaquille Rose also scored seven points and had four rebounds and four steals for Falcons, as Damion Smith’s 10 points were the most for Avalanche, while Okieffe Noble scored seven points.
