Johnson, Pagon in final showdown of Hi-Pro Champs

The finals of the men’s and women’s 2016 Hi-Pro All-Jamaica Tennis Championships will bring the curtain down this afternoon at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre, Picadilly Road.

Damion Johnson, the top seed in the men’s singles, will face second seed Dwayne Pagon after both won their respective semi-finals comfortably yesterday. They will meet approximately 2:30 this afternoon.

Johnson defeated unseeded Cliff Dwyer in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, while Pagon got the better of unseeded Jeremy Miller, also in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

In the battle for the women’s singles title, top seed Michaela Stephens will face unseeded Pauline High this afternoon at 1:00.

Stephens had things quite easy in her semi-final yesterday by beating unseeded Moesha Fox in straight sets 6-0, 6-2, while Hylton upset second seed Jenna Harrison in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.

Johnson, who has been Jamaica’s number one player for many years, is highly fancied to win, but the experienced Pagon is expected to fight him all the way.

“I am pretty confident of winning this title, although I expected Pagon to give me a tough challenge. I have played him in many tournaments and came out victoriously,” Johnson said.

Pagon said he is expecting a hard match from his opponent. “It won’t be a runaway victory for Johnson, as he will have to work very hard for each and every point,” he said.
