Getting Your Car Ready for a Hurricane
The time is perfect to get your vehicle in good shape before the onset of a hurricane. In doing so, there are several items to make sure you get done in order to minimize any potential damage.
1. Know the type of insurance coverage you have. Many persons have motor vehicle insurance but fail the read the fine prints. In this season, take a look at your policy and know what you signed up for and the steps you would need to take in case you need to make a claim.
2. Check and replenish all fluids from, transmission, engine, brake, battery, power steering, radiator coolant and windshield wiper fluids. Also, ensure your tyres are properly inflated (this includes your spare tyre).
3. Too many times persons walk up to a gas station with a bottle buying gas because they ignored their fuel level indicator. Don’t let this happen to you. Fill your gas tank and any reserve containers to their capacity. When a hurricane threatens lines are bound to be long and chaotic, avoid the frustration. Make sure you have enough fuel for your vehicle.
4. Have an emergency kit in your vehicle. These must-have items may include: a pocket knife, extra fuses, road flares, emergency tyre sealant, extra quarts of motor oil, power steering fluid, a tyre jack, jumper cables, a flashlight, batteries, a battery powered-radio, pen and paper, a blanket, can opener, first aid kit and extra reserves of food and clean water.
5. If possible, park your vehicle on higher ground away from tall or loose structures for example, light poles, stop lights, road signs or trees that have a chance of falling and causing damage. Also, apply your emergency break if needs be as well masking tape to your car windows (in case they get shattered, the cleanup would be a bit easier).
