The Buzz proves a nightmare in None Such Sprint feature
In a performance that illustrated pure class, the Philip Feanny-conditioned Buzz Nightmare crippled rivals in deep stretch to win the $1.2-million None Such Sprint Trophy feature in an electrifying run at Caymanas Park yesterday.
It was the progressive bay colt’s fourth consecutive victory from five starts this season and despite carrying a mere 52.0kg,
Buzz Nightmare dealt the highly competitive field a spanking, capturing the Graded Stakes event for three-year-olds and upward over 1,200 metres by two-and-a-half lengths in a blistering and career best time of 1:10.0 minutes.
The final time was a shade outside of the track record of 1:09.2 minutes set by another great sprinter, Eros, in 1993.
Buzz Nightmare, under Oneil Mullings, used his superior speed and shot to an early lead at the start of the race over stable companion Campesino (Paul Francis up) and reigning champion sprinter Poker Star, under Omar Walker.
Approaching the final turn, Poker Star, under strong urging, tried to make a challenge but at the time Buzz Nightmare was still under a snug wrap from Mullings and from that point on it was clear who the winner would be.
When Mullings asked Buzz Nightmare to run in the final furlong and a half, the far striding colt responded well and powered home for an emphatic win, leaving the rest of the field to battle for the minor placings.
Campesino did well in deep stretch and finished second with last year’s Superstakes hero Franfield (Bebeto Harvey astride) getting third position.
The highly fancied Poker Star, toting top weight of 57.0kg, gave no fight entering the straight and was relegated to a disappointing fourth place.
“Big horse, this is a very big, big horse,” Mullings beamed.
Buzz Nightmare (Into Mischief – Queen Of The Battle), who is bred by Ham Stables Limited and owned by Two Penyu, has now won nine races from 12 career starts with lifetime earnings of just over $4 million.
Meanwhile, the Anthony Nunes-trained and Shane Ellis-ridden Very Classic easily brushed aside rivals to win the Terremoto Trophy co-feature on the 11-race programme.
The two-year-old grey filly by Western Classic – Verity won the 1,000-metre round event by five lengths in a quick 59.3 seconds over Money Magnet and Lady Faye.
Trainers Wayne DaCosta, Anthony Nunes and Rowan Mathie saddled two winners each, while jockeys Shane Ellis and Robert Halledeen booted home two winners each.
DaCosta was successful with Mr Universe in the first race, and Miss Fiesty in the 11th and final event. Nunes unsaddled Very Classic in the second race and Megatron in the fourth race, both ridden by Ellis, while Mathie was successful with Fortuneonehundred in the seventh race, and Polly B in the ninth event.
Halledeen’s winners were Acapulco in the third race and Fortuneonehundred.
Racing continues on Wednesday.
