Valley Of The Cats lands Don Tankoy Memorial Cup
The Carl Anderson-bred, owned and trained Valley Of The Cats, under a patient ride from apprentice Javaniel Patterson, won the Donald Tankoy Memorial Cup feature in fine style at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Valley of The Cats, who was a disqualified winner at this level, sat off the early pace and came with a strong run in deep stretch to win by one-and-a-half lengths going away from the fast-finishing Memory Of TS (Linton Steadman up) and the prominent Reassurance, under Bebeto Harvey.
The final time for the 1,300-metre event, a maiden condition race for native-bred three-year-old fillies, was a decent 1:21.0 minutes, although the racing surface was deemed fast.
Earlier on the nine-race programme, Armageddon, trained by many-time champion Wayne DaCosta, made a smashing debut in a maiden special weight event for native-bred two-yearolds by a commanding 10 1/2 lengths.
Ridden by Omar Walker, Armageddon (Nuclear Clear – Bonsai) stopped the clock in 1:06.3 minutes in the 1,100-metre event. Vice Royalty (Ameth Robles astride) was second, five lengths ahead of Fourthousand, under Harriston Lewis, in third.
Apprentice Dane Dawkins was the pick among the jockeys as he rode two winners. He was successful aboard Play Back for trainer Roy Mathews in the fifth race, and Pure Amazement for trainer Ian Parsard in the eighth race.
Racing continues on Saturday with the running of the Kenneth Mattis OD Memorial Trophy over 2,000 metres, and the Saint Cecelia Cup over 1,300 metres.
Former two-time Superstakes winner Typewriter is scheduled to make his seasonal appearance for the Kenneth Mattis trophy.
