#TrackingMatthew: Schools not operating as shelters to reopen tomorrow – McKenzie
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie this morning said he has advised the Ministry of Education that all schools not being used as shelters will be able to resume classes tomorrow.
He was addressing a press conference at the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM).
Schools currently being operated as shelters are expected to be deactivated by Friday and the minister expects a full resumption of schools by Monday.
McKenzie added that majority of the shelters, which were established in anticipation of the passage of Hurricane Matthew, will be deactivated by 2:00 pm today.
Earlier, ODPEM recommended a return to routine operations across the island, where possible.
The local government minister also reported that Government ministries and departments have been reopened. The Jamaica Urban Transit Company has also resumed its services, but on a limited basis.
