Cocktails with… Tosh Alexander
Back home since March after residencies in New York and Florida, Tosh Alexander is in a good place with an EP titled Worth The Wait in tow. The songbird accepts our invitation to sip and to gab about renewal, as well as the influences behind her drive and pursuits.
What’s your favourite sip?
I enjoy having a glass of Riesling every now and then.
What tunes do you find yoursef humming while in the shower?
It’s normally my 90s R&B playlist. Or Jhene Aiko; her music gets played daily.
What’s the most enduring dream you’ve nurtured with regard to your singing career?
I think I have spent the majority of my career working on growing vocally because it’s important to me that my craft speaks for itself.
When should a book be judged by its cover?
Never. Yes, our appearance is how we are naturally perceived, but I’ve learned that looks shouldn’t be the sole basis on which to judge someone.
Who is your musical idol?
Whitney Houston; she made me want to sing.
What takes over when you approach a mic or a hair brush?
Passion… In that moment I become who I truly am!
How do you deal with rejection?
There is nothing exciting about rejection; however, I do use it as inspiration to do better and be better.
When it comes to fame, does the end justify the means?
Fame has its pros and cons, and once I made the decision to pursue a singing career I also embraced taking the good with the bad.
If you could insure your voice, would you?
I never thought about it, but it is something I would do. As a vocalist, my voice is my instrument and livelihood, so it’s important to protect it.
Which celebrity’s death shook you?
Aaliyah. I still remember the night I found out, and how I felt. It was my first time mourning the death of a celebrity.
How can an artistic temperament benefit from a dose of business savvy?
It is important for anyone pursuing creative expression to have insight into the business aspect of their industry. You tend to be taken more seriously when you’re aware of what is going on around you and less likely to be taken advantage of.
