Jamrocking The Runway!
What may have been dismissed as a strange experiment or gimmick a few seasons back, matured into a full-formed, ‘see-now, buy-now’ model during the unveiling of the Spring/Summer 2017 collections,l which saw the traditional six-month waiting game relegated to the history books of fashion retail. The immediacy of this new format saw pre-produced pieces being purchased moments after their debut in New York City, London, Milan, and Paris, officially heralding the era of the shoppable runway show. Quelle surprise, postioned amid this fresh concept were the ever-growing count of daughters (and son) from The Rock. Starting Stateside, and traversing the Atlantic into mainland Europe,
SO hits rewind on their power-walks for the most covetable houses of the industry.
THE BIG APPLE
Autumn/winter staples such as knits found their way into the collections of many designers. Red and yellow were the favoured colour palette, and the timeless bra replaced the bustier and crop top as the top of choice. Bare shoulders – which reality television star Kim Kardashian West rocked endlessly at Paris Fashion Week – was the neckline du jour, and the uber-feminine ruffle trend, which gained traction across The Pond, saw its beginnings in NYC…
THE OLD SMOKE
…And speaking of frills, ‘rufflemania’ exploded in this capital, while romantic details of embroidery, sheer, brocade, and lace accompanied the return of the 1980s puff-sleeve and the grungy slouch of the 1990s extra-long sleeve. Denim became distressed and frayed at the hands of the design contingent, and khaki dominated as the essential colour-it-ours.
THE DRINKABLE CITY
Here the spectacle of fashion was on full display as adorned military and marching band jackets took over. Glittery sequins gave everyone fever, and the transparency of sheer provided full-view, thanks to chiffon and gauze. The 1990s returned to the Italian city on the practicality of performance nylons with bomber jackets, tracksuits, leggings, and cargo pockets.
THE CITY OF LIGHTS
Kitten heels made their way toward the photographers’s pit in London, with the’80s throwbacks making a return in increased iterations – think: ruching, lamé, and stilettos. Frothy tulle skirts and gowns tapped into fashionistas’ inner ballerina just in time for the miniature bag to sling across lithe torsos, while pinks reigned supreme.
