Cops happy for awards, but say part of duty is to be brave
WOMAN Corporal Angella Senior and Constable Denardo Dixon were two of seven Jamaica Constabulary Force members presented with the Medal of Honour for Gallantry at yesterday’s National Honours and Awards ceremony at King’s House in St Andrew.
Senior and Dixon were honoured for demonstrating acts of “bravery, discipline and determination in the face of extreme danger” when they apprehended men who reportedly committed a double murder in Little London, Westmoreland last November.
Yesterday, Dixon told the
Jamaica Observer after the ceremony that his and his colleague’s actions are merely fractions of what police do on a regular basis.
“Regardless of the circumstances faced on a day-to-day basis, we just have to be professionals and execute our duties in the way we are to do it. We are professionals, and a part of our duty is to be brave, so we just have to do the job that is required at the time and think about others and not necessarily ourselves,” he said.
However, he said: “I am pleased to be here to collect this award and I am very proud of myself.”
Swift action by Dixon and Senior led to the arrest of three men suspected to be involved in the murder of 33-year-old Fabian Allen, a musician of Little London, Westmoreland, and 70-year-old Leonard Nanco, a pensioner of Big Bridge also in the parish.
It was reported that about 2:30 pm on November 3, the two men were inside a shop when a silver Nissan Tiida drove up, two men alighted and immediately opened gunfire, hitting them.
Both men were taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead.
Shortly after, Dixon and Sinclair intercepted the Nissan Tiida on the Sandy Bay main road and nabbed two of the suspects. The operation continued and the third man was picked up some time after.
Senior, who said that she was “extremely proud and honoured” to receive the award, also insisted that what was done by her and Dixon was simply what was required of them.
“We are here to serve and protect, and for me I did what I had was to do at the time,” she said.
