KC face Bridgeport, JC tackle ‘Selassie’ in Walker Cup semi-finals
Kingston College and Bridgeport High will lock horns in one of two intriguing ISSA/FLOW Walker Cup semi-final contest at the Constant Spring Field today.
The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm, while Jamaica College and Haile Selassie will contest the feature game of the double-header at 3:00 pm.
Both teams in the curtain-raiser are currently in impressive form, but Kingston College are the more attacking of the two and will be favoured to make it following their stellar performance in eliminating defending champions Wolmer’s Boys’ on last.
The inform Ludlow Bernard-led unit would feel as if they have survived the storm after facing their toughest task in a 4-3 sudden death penalty win over Wolmer’s after they played out a 2-2 scoreline in full and extra time.
Though knowing little about today’s opponents, Bernard, who described his players as champion material, is confident that they will prove a handful for the opponents in what is expected to be an action-packed encounter.
The North Street-based team will once again be led by Rashawn Mackinson and his wing men Denilson Simpson, Trayvone Reid, Dashawn Donaldson and the ever-composed Fabian Grant in making things difficult for Bridgeport’s defensive unit.
“I haven’t seen Bridgeport all season, but they defeated Denham Town and Denham Town is a team that gave us problems, so I am going to be respectful of what they have to offer.
“But then again I know that my players have champion material in them and we won’t be taking anybody lightly, but we will be going at them and we will be going for the victory,” Bernard said.
However, Bridgeport have taken down some relatively big scalps so far this season and they will be cautiously optimistic about their chances of getting by their more favoured opponents, especially after a comfortable 2-0 win over Denham Town on last.
The likes of Shane Moodie, Jevaughn Dunn and Captain Kyle Ming will carry the weight of the Portmore-based team’s attack as they seek to upset the applecart.
The feature game will also be an intriguing one against Manning Cup champions Jamaica College boys who were comfortable in dispatching long-time rivals Holy Trinity 3-0 in their quarter-final fixture which would have set them up nicely going forward.
But the Geoffrey Maxwell-conditioned Haile Selassie are proving to be a very dangerous underdog so far and they will be brimming with confidence against the Old Hope Road-based powerhouse.
