JDF soldiers, relief supplies leave Jamaica for Haiti
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica Defence Force personnel and relief supplies are scheduled to leave Jamaica today for Port Au Prince, Haiti.
This is in response to the impact of Hurricane Matthew on the country on October 4, 2016.
According to a news release from the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), a United States C130 Heracles military aircraft provided by the United States Embassy, which arrived in Jamaica on Tuesday October 18, will be the carrier.
The ODPEM said that eight military personnel will travel with the shipment.
In Haiti, the JDF personnel will assist with the distribution of supplies and also make preparation for further support to that nation State.
“The shipment contains quantities of food supplies, water, infant products, and tarpaulins. The items were procured with funding through the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency. Procurement, management and logistics services were provided by the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management,” the release continued.
The initiative is being coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Ministry of Local Government and Community Development, the Jamaica Customs Agency, the Airports Authority of Jamaica, Jamaica Defence Force, Jamaica Constabulary Force, US Embassy (Kingston), and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency.
