Bermuda cops probing shooting death of teen
HAMILTON, Bermuda (CMC) – The police have launched an investigation into the death of a teenager, who was shot at a home in the parish of Devonshire on Tuesday in a fresh outbreak of violence on the island.
The police have described the death of the teen, who has been identified as 19-year-old Isaiah Furbert, as “another senseless murder”.
Furbert became the 31st firearm fatality in Bermuda since incidents began to spiral in May 2009, and the fourth since the start of the year. He is also the island’s youngest gun murder victim since 18-year-old Jason Lightbourne was killed on July 23, 2006.
The latest bout of violence started last Thursday, the day Hurricane Nicole battered the territory, when a 24-year-old man was shot in the arm by a lone gunman outside a Hamilton nightclub. The victim was treated in hospital and later released.
In another incident late Sunday, two men were seriously injured when they were stabbed during a brawl. A 29-year-old man was arrested over the incident, but later released on bail .
The injured men are now recovering in hospital.
“This is yet another senseless murder of a young man who was just entering the prime of his life. We are looking to bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice and bring some measure of closure to the family,” said Acting Detective Chief Inspector Mark Clarke.
National Security Minister Jeff Baron expressed his shock at the latest murder and extended his condolence to Furbert’s family.
“The ministry is aware that there are reports of increased tensions in those areas around Bermuda where there is gang activity,” he said.
“We will certainly do our part to provide the necessary resources to the police and the various helping agencies to support them as they address this latest spate of gun and gang violence. But government can only do so much. We need those community leaders and social advocates, those moral voices in our churches, schools, sports clubs, businesses, unions and even those across the political spectrum to step in and do what they can to help ease and calm the tensions in their respective communities,” Baron said.
In a statement, the opposition’s spokesman on home affairs, Walter Roban, said the Progressive Labour Party is deeply saddened to hear that another young man has lost his life to senseless gun crimes.
“Today, another family mourns the loss of a loved one, and it is a sobering reminder that we as a community must collectively take strides to reduce the prevalence of these types of crimes. We recommend strong action be taken to combat youth unemployment, lack of opportunities and the need for not just jobs, but a sense of hope and belonging and that they matter in Bermuda,” he said.
