Campesino to return to winning ways
Campesino is tipped to win the top-rated Open Allowance event today at Caymanas Park.

Campesino to return to winning ways

The Royal Dad is the only trophy race on the 10-race card at Caymanas Park today.

However, where most attention is expected to focus is on the second to last race on the card where the three-year-old chestnut gelding Chace The Great will put his three-race undefeated run on the line against a tough-looking field of quality sprinters.

The three-year-olds and upward, Open Allowance call going 1,100 metres for a purse of $845,000 has attracted nine runners including seasoned campaigners Campesino, recent winner Crucial Appeal, Traditional Prince andDreamcometrue, along with borderline runners Polly B and Force De Jour.

Another who will “chace” the great for parity is the promising three-year-old Classic-winning filly, Nuclear Affair, from the barn of Gary Subratie. The 1,000 Guineas winner and the Oaks runner-up will be taking on stronger elements of the class for the first time and having already put away Campesino, Force De Jour and some of these to win the Seek Exercise Book Trophy Open Allowance call on August 20, could be a danger to all and sundry.

With the exception of Campesino, all the other major pretenders are recent winners. But even so, this consistent six-year-old front-runner looks a lively prospect in his preparation and can turn the form around and take a serious hand in the finish, despite giving away weight all around except to Crucial Appeal, who is saddled with 56.5kg.

The Philip Feanny-trained Campesino, when last at the races on September 17 and installed the 6/5 favourite to win the St Cecelia Cup feature going 1,300 metres, took the lead at the top of the lane when ridden by apprentice Linton Steadman, but was gobbled up byBrawn passing the 16th pole and faded badly to finish fourth. On that occasion, Campesino might have done too much chasing cheap speed and then found wanting when it mattered most.

However, while today’s field looks even more formidable, Campesino looks better prepared and with the distance reduced and the veteran jockey Ian Spence called upon to replace Steadman in the irons, the gelded son of Compadre has more than a lively shot of returning to the winner’s enclosure for the third time this season from his last nine races.

This is in the presence of his old foe, Dreamcometrue, one of his conquerors on last, Chace The Great, Crucial Appeal with the champion jockey Shane Ellis remaining in the saddle, and Traditional Prince, who will truly enjoy this sharp sprint with the in-form claiming apprentice Bebeto Harvey, who replaces jockey Ameth Robles.

Nuclear Affair is another with whom Chace The Great has to also contend with here, but who took a back seat in the Saint Cecelia while his stablemate Brawn strode to victory. Jockey Paul Francis will climb aboard Nuclear Affair on this occasion in place of her regular rider Robert Halledeen.

Meanwhile, the Royal Dad Trophy event could prove to be just as competitive as Open Allowance scamper, especially in this small field of seven runners, where three-year-olds and upward – imported three-year-olds and upward, NW3 Lifetime and Native Bred three-year-olds Grade (G3) will compete for a purse of $850,000 going 1,820 metres.

In today’s extended sprint event, there are no less than five of the seven runners who possess worthwhile chances of winning the event. Chief among them is the Robert Pearson-trained and hard-knocking three-year-old chestnut colt, Will In Charge, who looks poised to get back on the winning path with the champion jockey Shane Ellis called to the saddle. His nemesis, though, the Richard Azan-trained Jamai Raja, could once again become one of his chief adversaries, along with Mr Doitbetta, Francia’s Pride and Awesome Destiny.

Also on the card is a 1,000-metre round native-bred and imported two-year-old maiden special weight contest. The quick sprint event which carries a purse of $800,000 should be a straight battle between debutant Superbolt and Duty First with the edge given to the latter based on experience.
