teenAGE Team of the Week for the FLOW Super Cup
The FLOW Super Cup got off to a cracking start on Friday and concluded the following day with both the Manning and DaCosta Cups having four representatives each in the quarterfinals. The competition’s prestige was fully justified as the players put on a show, with brilliant passing and a catalogue of goals that whetted the appetite of supporters for more to come. Here are the 11 players who we felt stood out in their respective positions:
Benjamin Williams – Clarendon College
It was touted as the most enticing fixture of round one: Clarendon College versus Jamaica College. However, the reigning Manning Cup champions and last year’s beaten finalists were stunned, losing 1-0 to a resolute opposition and a majestic Benjamin Williams, whose brilliant display between the sticks proved crucial in the first upset of the competition. Williams made key saves that left a rampant JC attack frustrated and dismayed as their efforts, due to the dominant custodian, proved fruitless.
Kyle Ming – Bridgeport
Kyle Ming was influential in guiding his teammates through an onslaught of Dinthill attacks. As captain, he steered the ship in the final 30 minutes which saw the DaCosta cup team fight to overturn a 1-0 deficit. However, the Manning Cup team continues their amazing run and Ming continues to play a key and effective role in his team’s success thus far.
Javain Brown – Kingston College
Once again the standout man in defence, Brown looks mature beyond his years on the football field. His commanding presence and ability to read the game gives his team the defensive edge against any opposition that challenges KC this year.
Scott Williams – Wolmer’s Boys
Scott has been impressive all season alongside his defensive partner and captain Jahwani Hinds. Though the latter has been a wall for the Wolmer’s defensive, it was William’s display on Friday evening against Little London that captured the eye. He has an assertive attitude towards the game and is skilled in the art of tackling. He has been exceptional when called on by coach Vassel Reynolds and is a major contributor to Wolmer’s 10 clean sheets this season.
Ronaldo Robinson – Kingston College
Though he failed to score in Saturday’s win against Vere Technical, the 15-year-old has already notched 4 goals this season. Robinson was exceptional along the right wing of KC’s midfield. His mazy dribbling proved too much for the Vere defence who were at times left open and exposed due to his skillful touches. His effect on the team is unquestionable and if he remains consistent, he can become an important figure in what might turn out to be a very memorable year for the Ludlow Bernard coached team.
Ryan Spence – Excelsior High
It was hard to pick a Man of the Match in Excelsior’s thumping of Ocho Rios High. However, Ryan Spence perhaps edged his other teammates to the award after he tormented his opponents with that clinical left foot of his. The midfielder had numerous opportunities on target and finally got his goal in the 29th minute when he brilliantly and delicately chipped the ball over the beleaguered Ocho Rios custodian to score his team’s 3rd goal on the night.
Andrew Daley – Wolmer’s Boys
Daley’s performance for Wolmer’s against Little London was more than magnificent. He was dominant in midfield and controlled every aspect of the game linking both defence and attack. His brilliant performance was capped off with a sumptuous finish to open the scoring in what was a demolition of the opposition, receiving the ball from a clever flick by teammate Alphonso Gooden and neatly slotting the ball under the helpless goalkeeper.
Rivaldo English – Wolmer’s Boys
According to coach Vassel Reynolds, if Wolmer’s are to achieve any success this season, their gifted maestro Rivaldo English will have to be on par and he definitely was in his team’s 6-0 win, in which he contributed to four of those goals, scoring two and assisting the others. It was an effective performance from the son of former national player Irvino English. Those two goals propelled him into double figures for the season as the player continues to enjoy his new found leadership role in a team that’s hungry for titles.
Omar Thompson – Kingston College
Thompson continues to impress and standout in Kingston College’s brilliant season so far. He could have had a hatrick on Saturday evening after scoring the opening goal of the match and having two other goals controversially ruled offside. He was once again crucial to the team’s victory and ran at the opposing defence constantly throughout the match, displaying his amazing stamina and dribbling attributes.
Creggton Charlton – Clarendon CollegeCreggton Charlton, remember the name. He was the man who scored the memorable goal for Clarendon College to beat the defending Manning Cup champions 1-0. It was a convincing display from the DaCosta Cup outlets who showed that the teams from the rural areas can put up a fight against the best teams from the Manning Cup.
Alphonso Gooden – Wolmer’s Boys
‘Big Al’ as he is known by his teammates, was exceptional once again for his team, scoring his second hat-trick of the season in what was a complete display by the forward. His goals in minutes 39, 52 and 64 pretty much signalled the end of Little London and booked the spot for Wolmer’s in the quarterfinals. It was a powerful display from the striker who will need to be brilliant once again when the team faces Kingston College on Saturday.
Javoney Brown – St. Elizabeth Technical
It was a thrilling encounter at Catherine Hall between STETHS and Holy Trinity where the latter just missed out on a place in the quarterfinals. It was striker Javoney Brown who sealed their fate after netting a late winner and his second of the match to send his team onto the next round. Brown was key in the win against Trinity after twice scoring for his team in the come from behind 4-3 victory.
