Jamaica finish
Jamaica finished the first round of the Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA) zonal qualifying series for the 2018 FIVB Men’s World Volleyball Championship with a bang on Monday night at the Anthony Nesty Indoor Sports Hall in Paramaribo, Suriname.
The sixth-ranked team in the CAZOVA region outclassed Turks & Caicos 25-6, 25-7, 25-11 to win the four-country Group B tournament.
The match lasted just 52 minutes and the only player to score in double figures was Jamaican Dellan Brown with 11.
Not only were the Jamaicans unbeaten in the straight round-robin tournament, they did not drop a set after losing the first one they played – against Suriname on Sunday morning.
Jamaica had qualified for the second round since Sunday with victories over both the hosts and Guadeloupe, and coach Gatasheu Bonner said he was impressed with his players who were able to maintain their focus without getting complacent.
Captain Ryck Webb said that although they did not expect a tough match, his players were determined to play their game and not be concerned about the level of the opposition.
At the recently concluded first round of the World Championship Qualifier held in Suriname, 15-year-old Clifton Clarke, walked away with the award for Best Digger, Best Passer and Best Libero.
Clarke, a National Under-19 player and student at Camperdown High School, was the youngest player in the tournament, and the youngest to represent the country at the senior level.
Captain Webb was awarded the MVP and the Best Outside Hitter.
Jamaica had whipped Guadeloupe 25-23, 25-17, 25-21 for their second victory.
Guadeloupe were straight-set winners over Turks & Caicos in the day session.
