The Complete Racing Guide shares the comments of some of the winners on the 11-race programme at Caymanas Park last Saturday.
Legendary Pleasure, ridden by Linton Steadman and trained by Patrick Fong, easily took the first race on Saturday’s 11-race card. After the race trainer Fong said: “Well, I am just taking good care of him and treating him as a racehorse is supposed to be treated, and he has been repaying me for that.” As to the recent surge of winners from his camp, Fong was very clear. “Most of the time Mr Heffes has been with me and now I have Super Kids. Those two devoted horsemen are supporting the thrust, and I am endeavouring to give the quality results they are looking for. I always had this ability, but only now I have the support to show it.”
It was party time in the second race which was won in grand fashion by Party Cup ridden by Javaniel Patterson. After the win, owner Gary Brown said. “Boy, I have been through a lot of setbacks with this horse. As you can see, from the month of May he did not run. Sometimes Party Cup trains well and then on the race day there is a let-down. But today (Saturday) was excellent, really excellent. The performance was good and I just hope for the best for him from now on.” Brown indicated to the Complete Racing Guide that Party Cup worked well going into Saturday’s race. “ Party Cup worked well coming into the race – 1:17.1 for six furlongs and 1:03 for five, you could not ask for anything better.”
Race 6 was a gift for jockey apprentice Bebeto Harvey who won the race after leader Eternal Joy experienced problems in the straight, causing rider Shane Ellis to take a pull. This is what Harvey had to say: “Fortunately for me and Sound of Miracle, the race just came into my hands and I just have to give God thanks that nothing happened to the jockey and that Ellis is safe and alright, as the horse managed to pass the post with him aboard.”
Jockey Larris “Meego” Allen, now back home from Canada where he has been riding for a number of years, booted home the chestnut mare Rashaida for trainer Fitzgerald Richards in the seventh race and was quite pleased with his performance and the way he got the job done: “My strategy going into the race was that the trainer had two horses in the race,Ray Ray, which is the speed horse and Rashaida who also has speed but not as much, so my game plan was to sit chilly on him and wait for the quarter pole, then use the horse’s speed in the last two furlongs. That is just what I did and won the race.
Jockey Paul Francis took home Moneyneversleep in the eighth race, the first time in 11 starts that Moneyneversleep was passing the post in front. Francis then explained how he was able to get his mount past the winning post after such a long break from winning: “The horse has not been breaking well for some time now, so the plan was to try and get a clean break, then sit and watch the pace and then go through anywhere from the half-mile. The field was cheap but it turned out easier than I thought.
Chestnut filly Classy Butcher won the ninth race with jockey Wesley Henry, who was coming off a one-month break from a broken ankle. After the race Henry said: “The trainer Gary Subratie asked me on Wednesday morning if I was riding on Saturday and I told him yes, then he told me that he has a two-year-old he wants me to ride, and I also saw I was riding Classy Butcher when I looked on the overnight. On Friday, I was given instructions how best to ride her. I just followed the instructions, broke her as instructed, and from then she galloped to victory.
After Lottery Ticket’s victory in the co-feature Miracle Cure trophy, trainer Wayne DaCosta said: “She is a filly that does not take much because she loses her weight pretty easily. As she races, she loses the weight. But basically, non-winners of two races at the three-year-old level are always tough and she was able to get a good position and came flying in the finish. She is a decent filly.”
