Dacosta Cup semi-finalists decided

STETHS, Cornwall, Clarendon, Lennon to battle for rural area final

MONTEGO BAY, St James – Defending champions St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) led two other former champions in Cornwall College and Clarendon College, along with Lennon High into the semi-finals of the ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup after the end of the quarter-finals yesterday.

The teams topped their respective quarter-final zones and will continue their hunt for three titles that could be at stake — the Ben Francis KO, the daCosta Cup and the Olivier Shield.

Cornwall College, STETHS and Lennon High all topped their groups with maximum nine points, while Clarendon College edged Little London on goal-difference after both finished on six points each.

In the semi-finals of the Ben Francis KO next Wednesday, Cornwall College will play Lennon High and STETHS will meet Clarendon College with the winners meeting in the final two days later.

Yesterday, Cornwall College equalled the record for successive daCosta Cup wins in one season when they chalked up their 16th straight by thumping Manchester High 5-2 in Group P at Jarrett Park. Defender Pagiel Brown led the scoring with a brace as Cornwall College qualified for the last four for the first time since 2007.

They tied the record number of consecutive wins set in 2011 by Rusea’s High.

STETHS beat Petersfield High 2-0 at the STETHS Sports Complex to top Group R, while Lennon High edged Rusea’s High 1-0 in the second game at Jarrett Park, their third-straight 1-0 victory in the quarter-finals in Group Q to make it back-to-back qualifications to the semi-finals.

Clarendon College were shocked 2-1 by Spot Valley High at Juici Field in Group S, but finished tied on six points at the top of Group S with Little London, who beat Steer Town 3-1 at Frome.

But Clarendon College, who were losing back-to-back games following their 4-2 beating at the hands of Cornwall College in the FLOW Super Cup semi-finals on Saturday, advanced on a better goal difference.

At Jarrett Park Brown, who had scored just once this season, scored twice in the first half as Jourdaine Fletcher scored his 27th of the season in all competitions, while Shavon McDonald and Aiden Jokomba also scored for Cornwall College, who are unbeaten in 19 games all season.

Brown scored in the seventh and 45th minutes to stake Cornwall College to a 2-0 half-time lead, but Domani Henderson pulled one back for Manchester High in the 50th minute.

Fletcher then made it 3-1 when he converted from the penalty spot in the 67th minute with his eighth goal since the start of the Inter-zone round and 20th daCosta Cup goal.

McDonald made it 4-1 in the 73rd when he dribbled into the penalty area and beat goalkeeper Odane Reid with a low shot at his left near post.

Manchester High continued to fight and Ajay Chin scored a second in the 75th minute to cut the deficit to two goals. But two minutes later, Jokomba headed home from close range to restore his team’s three-goal margin.
