‘Trinity’ surprise
Holy Trinity High and Wolmer’s Boys’ yesterday recorded wins over Excelsior High and Haile Selassie High, respectively, to secure the last two remaining semi-final places in the ISSA/FLOW Manning Cup competition.
Holy Trinity stunned Excelsior 3-2 at Constant Spring playing field to take Group H honours and book their first-ever spot into the semi-finals of the Manning Cup.
Holy Trinity went into a 2-0 lead at half-time courtesy of goals from Fabrizzio Burton, who found the back of the net in the 26th minute, and Karim Brown (29th). Holy Trinity then benefited from an own goal in the 76th minute to go 3-0 up.
Excelsior hit back with two quick goals through substitute Jazeel Guthbert (87th) and a Holy Trinity own goal deep into stoppage time.
The win assured Holy Trinity top spot with six points after two victories and a loss in the second round.
Excelsior ended third with four points after a win, a draw and a loss.
In the simultaneous Group H game at Spanish Town Prison Oval, Camperdown High defeated Jonathan Grant High 3-1.
Camperdown, who had a win, a draw and a loss in the second round, ended with four points for second place due to a superior goal difference to Excelsior. Jonathan Grant, who had a win and two defeats, ended last with three points.
In the second game of the double-header at Constant Spring, Wolmer’s Boys’ scored a 1-0 win over Haile Selassie to take maximum nine points in Group K.
Mario Sailsman scored the winner for Wolmer’s in the 12th minute.
Haile Selassie were third with three points.
St George’s College, who registered an easy 6-0 win over St Catherine High, ended second with six points. St Catherine finished the second round without a point.
Earlier, Holy Trinity took a surprise two-goal advantage when Burton and Brown scored just before the half-hour mark.
Excelsior’s Chavoy Malcolm then conceded an own goal as Trinity went three goals up with 14 minutes remaining.
But Excelsior, who entered the day in pole position to take the lone semi-final spot from the group, gave themselves a lifeline when Guthbert scored in the 87th.
There was a nervy end to proceedings when Holy Trinity’s Sadayne Samuels miscued an effort beyond his own goalkeeper shortly before the final whistle.
Though Excelsior pressed for the equaliser, Holy Trinity held on for the win that gave them a historic berth into the semis.
In the semi-finals set for the National Stadium on November 19, champions Jamaica College are to battle Holy Trinity, while Wolmer’s are slated to clash with Kingston College for a third time this season.
