#LocalGovt16: JLP supporter calls party’s candidate ‘opportunist’
ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) caretaker for the Linstead Division Newton Amos’ intentions to run for councillor was questioned by a woman who identified herself as a veteran JLP supporter.
The woman, who distanced herself from cheering supporters, said she was present in support of her party even though her party decided to put forward an opportunist.
“Amos no care bout the people them, him only care bout himself. Is opportunity him want to turn big mayor so we won’t see him,” the woman, who did not give her name, argued.
She said that Amos should focus on the people at the member of Parliament level in North West St Catherine, to fight for fairness and hold Robert Pickersgill to his promises.
She said his intentions, it seems, have always been about power.
“Then, my girl, talk the truth. Him supposed to a hold Bobby accountable but him want to downgrade to councillor because him want to be in the light. If a so him show say him is a people person then mi no want him care bout me,” she reasoned.
Many JLP supporters, who insisted that she was not “a true Labourite” while defending Amos’ decision to run for councillor in the Linstead Division in the Local Government Division on November 28, were not amused by her argument.
“You a nuh true Labourite. You is a wannabe,” one woman countered.
“Why you couldn’t say the man love Linstead so much that him would even try to be a councillor to help out a situation,” she offered.
In the end, the women each agreed they were each entitled to their own opinion and would vote for Amos out of a natural love for their party.
