#LocalGovt16: PNP ‘very excited’ about retaining parish councils
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The People’s National Party (PNP) is reporting that all 228 candidates and Portmore mayoral candidate for the upcoming local government elections have been duly nominated.
Campaign chairman Noel Arscott said in a release this afternoon that the party is “very excited about the opportunity these elections will provide to the people in making sure the excellent work of the PNP-led municipal corporation will continue under their leadership”.
The PNP currently controls all of the parish council/municipal corporations, along with Portmore, which votes directly for a mayor.
“We welcome the fact that today’s process was without any major incident to report and this we believe speaks well of our maturing democracy, which is good,” Arscott said.
“All our candidates are quite upbeat about their chances and the Party is totally united around and behind all of them,” he added.
Arscott, Member of Parliament for Clarendon South Western is pointing to a high level of ground work being done and led by PNP President Portia Simpson Miller.
“We have been strategically moving across the country as part of our “People Link Up” and intend to give this our best shot under the circumstances, expecting to reap good results on November 28, 2016,” said Arscott.
