#LocalGovt16: Strong security presence in Eastern St Thomas
ST THOMAS, Jamaica — Despite light showers in Morant Bay, St Thomas, there is a strong security presence in the Eastern St Thomas constituency as Nomination Day activities kicked off Friday.
“Well, today is Nomination Day enuh so we are here to execute some crowd control,” a Jamaica Defence Force officer told OBSERVER ONLINE.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Fitzroy Williams reiterated this.
“We expecting eight persons to be here in terms of caretakers and councillors today,” he said. “Our presence here is to ensure that the Constitution of Jamaica is upheld and the day goes by as smoothly as possible.”
Meanwhile supporters of the Jamaica Labour Party have congregated in the Rudolph Elder park as they await a march to the constituency office where candidates will be nominated.
The nomination process is slated for four hours, between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. More than 228 candidates are expected to be nominated today for the November 28 Local Government election.
