Boulder kills boy in Broadgate, St Mary
A large boulder rolled from the hills overlooking the community of Broadgate in south east St Mary, killing a boy aged 12, injuring his twin sister and another sister Friday evening.
Up to late yesterday, there was no official dispatch from the police force’s information union, the CCN, but reports reaching the Jamaica Observer say that the boy, Brandon Williams, was watching television with his sisters when the boulder rolled onto their house. Brandon died on the spot, while his sisters were rushed to the Annotto Bay Hospital where they are admitted. One of the girls was later transferred to a Corporate Area hospital, as her condition was said to be serious. The medical condition of the other child could not be determined.
Later, reports suggested that three other rocks damaged another house nearby, but the occupants escaped unhurt.
The act of rocks falling is not uncommon to the Broadgate community, situated around five kilometres west of the town of Annotto Bay, which links the nearby eastern parish of Portland.
Heavy rainfall in recent weeks has also left the earth soft and motorists who ply the popular thoroughfare, referred to as the Junction Road, which connects St Mary with St Andrew have been advised in recent weeks to proceed with caution and be on the lookout for falling rocks, landslides and slippery roadways.
