A ‘Super Day’ for Bigdaddykool via the stewards’ room
Bigdaddykool a three-year-old bay gelding by Sorrentino – Beware Baby, owned by Stephan Narinesingh, trained by Anthony Nunes and ridden by apprentice Linton Steadman came out as the winner of the 38th running of the Burger King -sponsored Superstakes on Saturday last following the disqualification of first past the post, Franfield, ridden by another apprentice Bebeto Harvey, for causing intimidation and interference to Bigdaddykool in deep stretch.
The team of analysts from the Complete Racing Guide assesses the result of the Superstakes.
FIRST – Bigdaddykool: Brought glory to his lot of three-year-olds with a good run that included the beating of Horse-of-the Year Seeking My Dream and Perfect Neighbour. Bigdaddykool now joins a list of very few horses who have won the Superstakes at age three. At his best, when going long and even without the intervention of the stewards, this would have been quite a performance by Bigdaddykool. Pity his Brazilian sire Sorrentino is no longer around to produce more horses like Bigdaddykool. At three, there is room for improvement and it is going to be very interesting to see his development next season, but first, the Diamond Mile and the Harry Jackson Memorial Cup are on the horizon.
SECOND – Franfield: Did all that was asked of him with apprentice Bebeto Harvey in the irons. Franfield ran as expected and made his usually spurt in a timely manner, but the inexperience and probably the anxiety of Harvey cost the defending champion to lose his title.A true thoroughbred who has performed against the odds, Franfield will live to fight again. A good run, but it must have been rather difficult for trainer Richard Azan, who would have won his 10th Superstakes.
THIRD – Seeking My Dream: Simply not the horse he was this time last year. Seeking My Dream usual burst for two to three furlongs in his races was absent, and although close to proceedings, the punch and venom were both missing. He can repair the damage in the Diamond Mile.
FOURTH – Perfect Neighbour: Was not the same horse last season who won the Gold Cup, Prime Minsiter Stakes, Governor General’s Stakes and Harry Jackson Memorial Cup. The usual late rattle in the straight was not present and ran below par when much was expected from the champion stayer.
FIFTH – Superluminal: Ran a good enough race to finish fifth for a good chunk of the Superstakes pie. Maybe the Supertakes was asking too much of Superluminal.
SIXTH – Pinelope: Had a lot to prove against the best and failed to do so. This is not the end for Pinelope, so let’s keep watching her progress.
SEVENTH – Typewriter: Although early with the pace, Typewriter, who won this race on two occasions played no further part.
EIGHTH – Miracle Star: He came, he participated and he went home.
