International Student’s Day 2016
‘Promoting Safety and Security; students making piece a priority’ is the theme under which the National Secondary Student’s Council of Jamaica (NSSC) will be celebrating International Student’s Day. International Student’s Day is celebrated annually on November 17 to commemorate students who have lost their rights in activism across history. This day is recognized by every student across the country in view of the fact that it highlights young activists who were makers in their time.
When asked the question ‘Why do you think International Student’s Day is important?’, NSSC’s Region 1 (Kingston and St Andrew) vice president Ewan Burey told
teenAGE that, “International Student’s Day isn’t something that people should acknowledge for acknowledgement sake. It was through these students that awareness grew for the need of quality education that most students enjoy now.” The Wolmer’s Boys student continued on to say. “Some people say that true change is only brought about through struggle and these students have bared this struggle for us all. They are true advocates and quite frankly as a youth leader, but even before so as a student, I believe that it is absolutely necessary that we pay homage to these students in celebration of this day”.
The National Secondary Student’s Council, whose main aim is to advocate on the behalf of students to have their rights upheld, Region 4 (St James, Hanover, Westmoreland) will be hosting a commemoration service at Cornwall College on November 17, 2016. The NSSC will also have a photo competition in which schools are encouraged to send a picture to nsscja@gmail.com expressing how students can be peacemakers within the school community- the school with the most likes on Instagram combined with points for creativity and clear expression of the theme will win the competition. Along with those activities, they will also be hosting ‘Twitter Town Hall’, an online discussion surrounding the theme ‘Promoting Safety and Security; students making piece a priority’.
