Truck driver charged in fatal Mandela crash
ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — The police on Wednesday slapped multiple charges on a truck driver involved in an early morning crash that killed a motorcyclist on Mandela Highway in the vicinity of the Ferry Police Station, St Catherine.
The motorcyclist, who is unidentified, was reportedly trying to pass a parked vehicle when he was hit by a Nissan motor truck, which was travelling towards Spanish Town.
The motorcyclist sustained multiple injuries and was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the motor truck, 37-year-old Anthony Whittingham of Innswood, St Catherine, was subsequently charged with operating contrary to driver’s licence, having no insurance and failing to obey a police signal.
The incident occurred about 6:00 am, when one of the two lanes on the east-bound section of the highway is regularly closed to facilitate an exclusive lane for state-owned Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) buses heading towards St Andrew.
Meanwhile, the police are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying the deceased motorcyclist.
He was of dark complexion, about 160 centimetres (5 feet 3 inches) tall and was clad in floral shirt and yellow merino.
