Do not discard Pinelope in Diamond Mile
Despite Pinelope’s disappointing run in the Burger King-sponsored Superstakes on Saturday, trainer Patrick Fong said that racing fans should not disregard the chances of his filly in the Diamond Mile.
The Supreme Ventures Limited, Betting Gaming and Lotteries-sponsored Diamond Mile will be run at Caymanas Park on December 10 and carries a purse of US$115,000 (JA$13.5 million).
Pinelope had a lot to prove against the big guns coming into the 10-furlong Superstakes, but the filly was nowhere to be found and finished sixth in the eight-horse field.
“I thought she would have run a better race. Pinelope didn’t show me that she cannot compete against the top horses; however, she showed me that she cannot do it (beat them) going so long.
“She cannot manage them at 10 furlongs, but at a mile. I expect a much better performance from her.
“She came out of the Superstakes beautifully; she is eating out very well and she is happy. She is as fit as hands can make her, so I am hoping for the best. She is a talented filly and she is improving all the time,” Fong said.
Fong said that the Diamond Mile race itself will provide some stiff competition as no one horse has stood out.
“Well, it is a very great feeling to have a horse running in the Diamond Mile because I think that the race is a great race. My opinion is that the race is going to be a real promising race and after this one, the race will be talked about for many years,” he said.
