Shevon Thompson drafted
Former Vere Technical, George Mason and NCAA Division One men’s basketball rebounding standout Shevon Thompson has been drafted by Orlando Magic’s affiliate NBA developmental league team Erie Bayhawks — Pennsylvania.
The seven-foot Thompson, who was in this year’s NBA Draft, worked out for the Magic, the Houston Rockets, The Wizards and the Bulls, but didn’t get drafted due to questions of a prior injury which saw a decline in his senior year production.
The Detroit Pistons and the Houston Rockets had expressed significant interest in drafting him to their affiliate teams in the third or fourth rounds, but Orlando quietly and surprisingly drafted him earlier in their second round as their 11th pick.
Erie Bayhawks’s first pick in the first round was Anthony Brown, who played for the LA Lakers last season and was a second-round pick in last year’s official NBA draft. This highlights the calibre talent in the NBA Developmental league and NBA teams investment into development drafted or scouted talent for their rosters.
Thompson unfortunately has yet to play as he is out for six weeks with Acute Myocarditis. He is another mentee of Ajani Williams, who helps to guide his career.
