JLP allocating $600-m in ‘bushing work’ prior to local gov’t election — PNP
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The People’s National Party (PNP) says it is calling on “well thinking Jamaicans” to interpret and seek answers about the spending of some $600 million of taxpayers’ money on bushing over the next few days prior to the holding of local government elections on Monday 28th November.
According to a release by the PNP today, this amount was confirmed by the CEO of the National Works Agency, EG Hunter, who told PNP General Secretary Paul Burke in a telephone conversation that the decision was taken by the Cabinet.
“Outside of the staggering amount for bushing when remedial road repairs are urgently needed in eastern Jamaica, particularly Portland and St Thomas, the allocation of the work has circumvented the PNP members of the parliament, duly elected representatives of the people, and the municipal corporations / local authorities,” the release said.
The PNP added that “persons bushing can be visibly seen” on Munroe Road and Old Hope Road “in their green party shirts”.
Burke said that the PNP will be bringing the matter to the attention of both the Office of the Contractor General and the Political Ombudsman.
“Notwithstanding this ‘buying’ of support, the People’s National Party will continue its work in engaging the Jamaican People to support the Party’s Local Government Platform and its candidates,” the release said.
